James “Jim” Edward Hayes passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 23, 1941, in Goshen, Virginia, he was the son of Earl and Augusta “Gussie” Hayes, who preceded him in death.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army and carried that same sense of dedication and discipline throughout his life. A talented mechanic and entrepreneur, he owned and operated South Florida Engine Works for over 20 years, where he built not only engines, but lasting friendships and respect within the community. He also shared his knowledge and passion for mechanics as a technology teacher at Indian River State College, inspiring countless students through the years.
A proud member of Freemasonry and the Elks Lodge, James was a man of many talents and interests. He was a private pilot who loved the freedom of the skies, and he found joy in welding, race cars, sailing, hunting, fishing, and attending gun shows. Whether working with his hands, teaching others, or enjoying the outdoors, Jim lived life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and determination.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Jeanne Hayes and Jeri Gordon, both of Port St. Lucie; his beloved granddaughters, Danielle Gordon of Orlando, Amanda Gordon of Jensen Beach, and Sara Gordon of Palm City; and his sisters, Marjorie McCormack of Ohio and Anne Freede of Ohio.
James leaves behind a legacy of hard work, knowledge, adventure, and love for his family and friends. He will be remembered for his strong spirit, generous heart, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
A gathering will take place on Friday, May 29, 2026 at Haisley Funeral Home in Fort Pierce at 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM with a reception to follow.
