Harland “Cam” Camley, 92, of Ft Pierce, FL, formerly of CT and VT, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on February 26th. Cam was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Connie Camley, with whom he shared a life filled with love, laughter, and steadfast partnership. Cam and Connie began their time in CT but then were blessed with 38 years of retired life at Golden Ponds in Florida, where they enjoyed decades of friendship, shared memories, and simple joys alongside neighbors who became like family.
Harland is survived by his children: Harland Jr., Hollie, Brad, and Glenn; and predeceased by his daughter Charlene and by four stepchildren: Michelle Thornton, Linda Franklin, Phillip Dion, and Judith LeBeau. Cam leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Cam proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952-1956. During his time at sea, he was stationed aboard the USS Atka (AGB-3), a Navy icebreaker that conducted critical polar operations during the early Cold War. In September 1955, while serving in Arctic waters, Cam crossed the Arctic Circle and was formally initiated into the “Domain of the Polar Bear,” earning the distinguished title of Blue Nose sailor, a proud naval tradition marking service in extreme northern latitudes. After service, Cam began a remarkable 30-year career with Electric Boat in Groton, CT constructing nuclear submarines including the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear sub. Cam was especially proud of his participation with the USS Nautilus and its ability to revolutionize naval warfare. Connie and Cam's skill and reliability led to temporary assignments in Scotland and California, where they supported additional shipbuilding efforts. Cam took deep pride in his work and in playing a key role in building vessels that safeguarded generations of Americans.
Cam will be remembered for the enduring example he set through a life of hard work and commitment. His legacy lives on in the oceans he sailed, the submarines he helped build, and the family who carries his name forward. Harland and Connie will be laid to rest on March 30, 2026 at 11am at Rolling Oaks Cemetery in Port St Lucie followed by a Celebration of their lives from 1-3pm at the American Legion Post #318 at 1000 Savanna Club Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34952.
