Gertraut Elizabeth Schmidt, known to those who loved her as Elizabeth, lived a long and remarkable life that touched many hearts. She was born on November 2, 1926 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany. Her childhood led her to Vienna, a city she carried with her always, and remained a proud Austrian citizen throughout her life.
Elizabeth immigrated to America in 1954 and four years later, married Robert Schmidt in Miami, Florida. Their thirty-five-year marriage took them across places and experiences that shaped their family and strengthened their bond. Elizabeth built a career she enjoyed, working as a travel agent for American Express Company in Miami and then later in Princeton New Jersey. She had an eye for detail, a welcoming spirit, and a deep curiosity about the world that made her a natural fit for the work.
As a young adult, Elizabeth excelled in athletics. An avid skier, she enjoyed winter holidays alpine skiing with her family and friends. She was also an excellent swimmer and had qualified to represent Austria in the 1944 Olympic Games - a dream cut short by the war. Her dedication and love of sports were defining moments of her early life.
Her energy did not fade with time. After her retirement, Elizabeth delighted in sharing her talents and passions with her grandchildren. She loved being their Grandma, teaching them to paint and swim and encouraging them in their own pursuits as they got older. She remained a loving and inspiring presence in their life. In quieter moments she found peace in her garden and joy caring for her birds.
Elizabeth passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025 in Port St. Lucie, Florida. She was ninety nine. Her daughter, Krista was by her side.
She leaves behind a family who adored her and felt her love in every stage of their lives. She is survived by her daughters, Krista Fisher and Heidi Kahme and their husbands, David Coutts and Michael Kahme. She also leaves her grandchildren, Rebecca Kahme, Samantha Fasman and husband, Ross Fasman, Katherine Fisher and fiancee, Eric Mason, and Jonathan Fisher. Elizabeth is survived by her cousin, Arthur Spiegler, and his family in Vienna, a connection she cherished.
In her later years in Port St. Lucie, she shared her days with her dear friend and caregiver, Evelyn Scott, whose companionship brought comfort and light. Elizabeth will be remembered for her steady kindness, her strength, and the warmth she gave so freely. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family will carry her memory with them always. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
