Edward (Ted) Golden O’Rourke
November 27, 1931 – September 25, 2022

Ted O’Rourke age 90 of Ocean Breeze, FL and formerly of Nantucket, MA, died peacefully surrounded by his daughters on Saturday, September 25 2022.

Ted hailed from Mission Hill, Boston, MA, where he was born November 27, 1931 to Mildred Reddish and Michael Joseph O’Rourke. After graduating from Mission Church High School, Roxbury, MA ‘49 and Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA ’53, Ted served honorably in the United States Army, 617th Observation Battalion, Ft Sill, OK. After returning from Ft Sill, Ted married his true love, Joanne Mary Mayr on June 1, 1957. They were married 57 years until her death in 2014. Together they raised four children and a very spoiled King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.

Ted worked at John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company for 35 years as Senior Pension Underwriter and lobbyist. In his early years with the company he earned his Masters Degree going to night school at Northeastern University. Ted retired from the John Hancock in 1993, but was soon lured out of retirement by the calling of the Nantucket Stop N Shop Deli. Here he perfected his sandwich making skills to the delight of the entire island. Upon his true retirement he and Joanne split their time between Nantucket and Ocean Breeze, FL. He loved his million dollar view from his little cottage and his holiday soirées were always the highlight of the season!

Ted’s passions centered around his family, friends, sunshine and happy hour. He was always at the ready with a smile and a solution (unless Boston was playing). Imbued with youthful optimism and a no quit attitude, he never missed the chance for a road trip and always insisted on taking the scenic route. He had a deep connection to nature and shared his love of the animal kingdom with all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The prototypical Renaissance man, he possessed extraordinary intellect and diverse talents. He was known to spontaneously brighten your day, sing an Irish tune, tell a joke, write a poem, devise a unique DIY one of a kind fix, cook an amazing meal, correct your grammar and improve your vocabulary. Family and friends will forever be touched by all his gifts that he shared with abandon.

Left to mourn his passing are his three daughters, Maura O’Rourke Beck and husband CDR Michael Beck USN (RET) of Norfolk, VA, LCDR Julie O’Rourke McNaught USN (RET) of Orlando, FL, Amy O’Rourke Bridges and husband CWO4 James Bridges USCG, of Gloucester, MA, grandson LCDR Matthew Beck USNR and wife Marisa, granddaughter Merideth Pope and husband LT Thad Pope USCGR, grandson CPL Edward Trout USMCR, grandson CAPT Michael Trout USMC and his wife Gabrielle, granddaughter Maura Bridges, grandson James Bridges, great grand children Marin, Jack, Charlie and Maeve, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Nadine Kordt his loving caregiver and faithful companion as well as many many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, son Francis Xavier O'Rourke, his son-in-law Brian McNaught, devoted canine companion TJ, his parents Michael Joseph and Mildred Reddish O’Rourke, his father and mother-in-law, Paul Andrew Mayr and Mary McGee Mayr, his stepmother, Katherine Feeney Mayr, his brother William Joseph O’Rourke and wife Adelaide, sister-in-law Barbara Mayr Stinson and husband Jack, and sister-in-law Pauline Mayr White and husband Armand.

Everyone asked him the secret to his longevity - he was a big fan on throwing the cat another goldfish and the occasional Tanqueray gin martini, bone dry, stirred not shaken, straight up with a twist. Slainte!
