Dr. Leonard Berg, M.D., F.A.C.S.
October 5, 1933 – October 9, 2025
Dr. Leonard Berg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was 92.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Albert and May Berg, Leonard grew up in Miami, where his lifelong passion for fishing first began. After earning his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1956, he served his country as a Lieutenant Commander and Medical Officer for Submarine Squadron 4 in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960, specializing in submarine and diving medicine.
Following his military service, Dr. Berg completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami. He moved with his family to Fort Pierce in 1965, where he partnered with Dr. Cambron to become one of the area’s pioneering ophthalmologists. For nearly 30 years, he served the Treasure Coast community through his practice at St. Lucie Eye Associates and as an attending surgeon at local hospitals including Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and the Medical Center of Port St. Lucie.
Even after retiring from full-time practice in 1994, he remained devoted to medicine, volunteering his time to provide care for underserved patients locally and abroad. He participated in a medical and surgical mission to Nicaragua and also volunteered at various eye clinics throughout Florida, continuing to share his skill and compassion well into his later years.
Outside of his family and medicine, Leonard’s greatest joy was fishing. Whether casting for snook and tarpon or chasing bonefish across the flats, the water was his sanctuary. He was most at peace surrounded by the rhythm of the tides and the thrill of the catch.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy; his sons Elliott (Mary), Jeffrey (Deborah), and Paul (Jo-Ann); his grandchildren Zane(Rachel), Dusty(Carlee), Gabriela, Elyse, Rebekah; and great-grandchildren Rhett and Iliza. He was preceded in death by his son Edward.
Leonard’s life was defined by care—for his patients, his country, his family, and the waters he loved. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the family who will forever cherish his memory.
There will be a graveside service on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 12:00 PM, at Beth El Memorial Park, 5451 Old Dixie Hwy, Fort Pierce, FL 34946.
