May 10, 1921 — December 10, 2023

Ft. Pierce

Dorothy Louise McCulley Brennan, 102 years young, died peacefully at her home in Ft. Pierce, Florida, on December 10, 2023.

Dorothy was beloved by her children, Connie, Judy and Tom, and their children and grandchildren.

Dorothy was born and raised on a ranch in northern California. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley at 20 years old with a degree in Economics. She met and married John T. Brennan, a pilot in the United Stated Air Force, and spent the next part of her life living in the United States, Beirut, Lebanon, and Montreal, Canada. After John retired, they lived for years on their sailboat, finally settling in Ft. Pierce.

Dorothy and John co-founded the Ft. Pierce Yacht Club, and Dorothy founded the Dorothy Brennan Learn to Read Learning Center on Delaware Avenue in Ft. Pierce. She was a community activist and defender of the natural world, supporting numerous conservation organizations. She loved the ocean, and sailing and swimming were her passions, along with enjoying her family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Connie and Judy, and her son Tom (Karen); her grandchildren Vanessa Hale, Jeremy Hale (Jamie), Luke Hauschner (Alex), Ian Stewart (Nicole), Shane Brennan (Daris), Wren Brennan, Matt Lacasse and Allie Lacasse; and her great-grandchildren Oliver Hale and Alexander Stewart.

A memorial event is planned for the spring of 2024.

Contributions in honor of Dorothy’s passion for literacy can be made to the Learn to Read of St. Lucie County, 811 Delaware Avenue, Ft. Pierce, FL 34950. To donate online please go to: learntoreadslc.org.

Dorothy did not want to be thought of as dead. “Think of me swimming, sailing, dancing, snorkeling, teaching someone to read, or sitting on my porch watching the birds, boats, people fishing on the docks, loving sunlight and moonlight on the water, lightning, sunrises and sunsets. Love Always.”
