Obituary

Dixon Ruffner McCain, age 75, of Fort Pierce, Florida, passed away on September 28, 2026. Born on April 30, 1951, Dixon spent his life deeply connected to his hometown community and the people he loved, remembered fondly for his loyalty, kindness, sharp business acumen, and sly humor.

Family was always at the heart of Dixon’s life. He is survived by his son, Bret Ruffner McCain, and his wife, Jessica, along with grandchildren Aiden Ruffner, Grace Estelline, and Charlotte Paige; his daughter, Ashley Dare McCain, along with grandchildren Tayton, Tayaih, and Alana; and two cherished great-grandchildren, Raylin and Layton. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Debbi McCain. Although their marriage ended, Lana McCain remained an important and cherished part of his life, and the two maintained a close, lasting friendship. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Ruffner and Rui Estelline McCain, and his brother, Steven Ruffner McCain.

Dixon carried on a proud family tradition through his life's work. After graduating from Dan McCarty High School in 1969, he attended the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He returned home to Fort Pierce to join the family business, McCain Sales / Universal Signs and Accessories, which was founded in 1963 by his father, W.R. McCain. In 1979, Dixon became Vice President and helped grow the company into a full fabrication and graphics facility serving the traffic safety industry. His son joined the business in 2005, continuing the family legacy, before Dixon retired from day-to-day operations in 2010. Outside of the office, he enjoyed raising cattle for a number of years—a reflection of his connection to the land and his appreciation for a hands-on life. Game days spent at the Ranch were always among his favorites.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dixon had a lifelong passion for sports. A gifted athlete in his youth, he remained a devoted, lifelong Florida Gator fan, passionately following Gator football, basketball, and baseball. He especially loved baseball and spent countless hours coaching and watching generations of the McCain family play at Fort Pierce Elks Park. If anyone needed a game recap or highlight reel, Dixon could always be counted on for every detail. For him, ballgames were about much more than competition—they were cherished opportunities to gather, cheer from the sidelines, offer a little wisdom, and make lasting memories.

Dixon McCain leaves behind a legacy built through hard work, enduring traditions, and an unwavering devotion to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
