Truman Frederick Keefer

February 25, 1930 — April 10, 2022

Truman Frederick Keefer, born February 25th, 1930, in Frederick, Maryland, passed away on April 10th, 2022, in Fort Pierce, Florida. Truman, also known as Fred, was the beloved son of Truman Franklin Keefer and Mary Lavina Mehring, and the older brother of Joan Keefer Cox.

Truman received his liberal arts education at Western Maryland College (McDaniel College), graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1951, then received his doctorate from Duke University, where he studied American literature. He has published "Ernest Poole", "Philip Wylie", poetry, scholarly articles on Dickinson, Poe, Faulkner and linguistic theory, and pieces for magazines and newspapers.

Teaching at various colleges and universities since 1955, his areas of specialization included Shakespeare, creative writing, advanced composition, American Regionalism of the South and West, and the Modern British and American novel.

His hobbies were photography, listening to classical music, and travel at home and abroad. He also enjoyed astronomy and history.

Truman is preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Lee, his nephew, Randy, and his three former wives: Mary, Melanie, and Susie.

He is survived by his son Robert, (Robin) of Keezletown, Virginia; his daughter Alison Mintz, grandchildren Karmen Bonar, (Justin), Meganne Abercrombie, Robbie Mintz, Bekah Mintz, and great grandchildren Jack Bonar, Jameson Bonar, and McKinleigh Abercrombie, all of Ellenboro, North Carolina; his daughter Melisande Weidner, (Ken), and grandchildren Kathryn Weidner and Cassandra Weidner, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Fort Pierce Branch Library, 101 Melody Lane, Fort Pierce, Florida 34950; to WQCS at Indian River State College, 3209 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce, Florida 34981; or to the Treasure Coast Astronomical Society at 2382 NW Bay Colony Court, Stuart, Florida 34994.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022 from 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM with a service to follow at 12:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce. Burial will follow at White city Cemetery.
