Peggy Jean Justice Hallam

Peggy Jean Justice Hallam went to be with The King on April 22nd, 2018. Born on January
2nd, 1931, the only child of Ella Mae and Travis Justice, Peggy grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and attended Lausanne School then college at Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburgh.
“Loads of men” proposed to Peggy but as far as we know, she only said yes to John Hallam, whom she married on July 1st, 1950. They were married for almost forty years and had two children, Travis and Greg. They lived in Columbus, Memphis, and Birmingham before settling in Ft. Pierce. John was in the car business and Peggy was a stay-at-home mom and artist. They were a social couple and were involved in many activities at the Pelican Yacht Club as well as the Ft. Pierce Follies. When her children were in high school, Peggy attended FAU where she earned a degree in teaching. She taught math in Ft. Pierce and tutored in Ocala before moving to Vero Beach to be near her children. While in Vero, she tutored and volunteered at the Humane Society Thrift Store.
Better known as Meema to a lucky few, she loved painting, reading, London, little theater, Elvis, her dogs, her Louis Vuitton bags, and her family. She also loved collecting tchotchkes, jewelry, and funky art, though she would always paint over other artists’ pieces to make them just right.
During her last few weeks, she was visited by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends who will miss her spirited personality dearly. She will be remembered for her charm, beauty, colorful style, and her keen ability to burn a piece of toast. Most of all, Peggy was defined by her wry sense of humor, which she maintained through her final days. After spending her last birthday in the hospital, she complained that there was “no ice cream, cake, favors, games or prizes” and she “would not be using that facility next year.”
Peggy is survived by her daughter Travis (Robin), her son Greg (Tammy), her grandchildren Charlie Lambert (Jalita), John Lambert (Jenny), Amanda Lambert, Jordan Hallam (Stephanie), Carly Hallam Tosh (Daniel), Taylor Hallam, Chase Hallam, and her great-grandchildren Jack Lambert, Beau Lambert, and Hadley Hallam.
She is also survived by her art, much of which had names and backstories, because Peggy brought life to everything she touched. Give her a bowling ball and she would paint on a face and put it on a stick in her backyard to be with the other bowling balls. She was hysterical, artistic, wild, and never boring.
The family wishes to thank VNA Hospice for their kindness and care during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, they request that donations be made to the VNA Hospice or the Humane Society of Indian River County.
In honor of Peggy, do not take life too seriously. It can be, as she described most things, “just fantastic.”
Services: A service will be held on Friday May 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Community Church of Vero Beach.
