Paul Nathan Sampson

May 8, 1957 — January 13, 2020

On Monday, January 13, 2020, Paul Nathan Sampson hoisted his sails and set a course for the heavens. Surrounded by family in the comfort of his home, he left us under a bright sun, clear skies, and a cool breeze.

Paul was born to Raymond and Mary Sampson on May 8, 1957, in Copiague, New York. Alongside his older brother and father, he discovered his love of being on the water and became an expert sailor. From early on, he always had a wrench in one hand and a winch in the other and loved all things water and mechanics. Much of his life would be spent sailing, traveling, and restoring boats.

On June 25, 1983, Paul married Linda Rennie, the admiral to his captain, in Lindenhurst, New York. In the following years, the couple would welcome their sons, Adam and Sean. Paul was a proud father, mentor, soccer coach, and teacher. His hard work and patience helped create a safe place for his boys to flourish and grow—a home.

Paul sustained his love for the ocean through his careers as a commercial fisherman, marine mechanic, and boat-store manager. The tides later shifted, and he and Linda decided to build their own company, which is still going strong after thirty-two years. Paul became a licensed general contractor and the twenty-fourth licensed mold remediator in the state of Florida. He also gave back to his community through his involvement in various organizations. Paul was the former chair of the Fort Pierce Historic Preservation Board, a board member of the Fort Pierce Yacht Club, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He showed up whenever anyone needed him and even earned the nickname MacGyver for his ability to fix anything.

A consummate navigator, Paul charted his own path in all things and allowed everyone to accompany him for an adventure no one ever knew they needed but loved more than words could describe. In our moments of sadness, remember his words: “Take your time” and “Don’t forget to be amazed.”

Paul will be missed by his beloved wife of thirty-six years, Linda; his cherished sons, Adam and Sean; his daughters-in-law, Jessica and Bess; his grandchildren, Natalie and Nathan; and his brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Wendy. He will also be remembered by his village, too numerous to count and bursting with love for their fearless captain, friend, uncle, teacher, protector, master craftsman, and fixer of everything.

A celebration of life is planned for February 8, 2020, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages all guests to make a donation in his memory to the Fort Pierce Yacht Club Foundation.
