Mary Ann Hornsby

Mary Ann Hornsby died of natural causes on June 19, 2022. She was 88 years old.

Mary Ann was born in Blountstown, Florida on December 16, 1933 to Everett and Pearl McFarland. She grew up and graduated High School in Port St. Joe, Florida. She won a scholarship to college and attended FSU from 1952-1956. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Mary Ann was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and a member of the FSU Circus as a trapeze artist. She was a long-time member of the Eastern Star. Mary Ann pursued her Masters degree and graduated from UCF in 1970. In 1960, she started teaching second grade for the Polk County School District as well as principal at Snively Elementary School in Eloise, FL.

Although short in statue, Mary Ann was a strong-willed woman who worked hard for her career and family. She deeply loved her sons, John and Robert Browning.

After retiring from Polk County Schools, Mary Ann followed her son and grandson to Andros Island, Bahamas. She took a teaching job at the AUTEC school and later became principal.

One of her greatest accomplishments was the hard work she put into getting the AUTEC school SACS accredited. Working and living on Andros was one of the highlights of her life. She loved every student like her own and all the friends she made on and off base.

Mary Ann loved to travel and meet new people. She was an exchange teacher in Bath, England in 1971 for a year. She loved visiting Amsterdam and she crewed for the Tall Ship Races in Copenhagen. Her last adventure was traveling to American Samoa.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her mother and father, son, Robert Browning, grandson, John Daniel Browning, and brother, Bill McFarland.

She is survived by her son, John Browning and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Browning, her sisters, Lois Jean and Madeline and her brother, Patrick.

Until we meet again, you were loved and adored by your family and friends.
