Martha Jane Harris, 94, died in her sleep at Ava Care Assisted Living Facility in Brandon, Florida on June 1, 2021.

Martha was born in Milton, West Virginia on December 29, 1926 to Dolphus and Esther Martin, the fourth of six children. She graduated from Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia and she was married to Byron S. Harris on December 1, 1944 in Frederick County, Virginia. Their only son, Byron Stanley Harris, Jr was born on December 20, 1945.

Martha was a librarian for most of her career. She went back to college at age 40 and received her Master’s degree in Library Science from Florida State University.
When she returned to Fort Pierce, she worked for Fort Pierce Central High School as the Head Librarian until her retirement. She was a long-time member of Community United Methodist Church.

Martha is survived by her son, Stan Harris; daughter-in-law, Joanne; granddaughter, Crystal Woodworth; nieces, Donna Cloud, Dale Martin; nephews, David Martin, Michael Martin Reed and Tim Steinberger; and extended family, Kirk and Patricia Smith, as well as Tina and Grayson Murray. She is preceded in death by her husband, Byron; granddaughter, Kimberly Layton; brother, Marshall Martin; sisters, Betty Ann Elliot, and Eva May Steinberger.

Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Community United Methodist Church 3114 Okeechobee Road Fort Pierce, Florida.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 11AM to 12PM with a Service to begin at 12PM at Haisley Funeral Chapel 3015 Okeechobee Road Fort Pierce, Florida 34947. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park.
