Lonnie "Duke" D. Williams Iii

October 13, 1973 — February 23, 2020

Lonnie D. Williams III, “Duke”, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home in Fort Pierce, Florida on February 23, 2020. Duke was born in Wauchula, Florida on October 13, 1973 to Lonnie and Nancy Williams.

Duke was a star athlete in football and baseball at Manatee in Bradenton, FL and then Santa Fe High in Alachua, FL. After high school Duke received an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida as a catcher and power hitter. Later Duke transferred to the University of South Carolina and played ball until receiving a career ending eye condition and ultimately finished his education at the University of Florida receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree.

During the time Duke was playing ball he received several honors for Batting Averages, RBI’s and On Base Percentages. His hard work finally paid off when he was ranked fourth in the Nation for Extra Base Hits.

After graduation Duke moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast to pursue a career in the insurance industry. Later he moved to Vero Beach to work and begin a family with Nicole and Taylor. In his spare time Duke was able to join his big brother Bobby to share their love of fishing and diving. On many weekends they could be found far offshore in their Shamrock.

The most special moment in Duke’s life was the birth of his son, Jake. Fort the next 16 years the two spent countless hours learning, studying, practicing and perfecting Jake’s baseball skills and helping guide him to become the kind, caring, special young man he is today. Duke was always willing to instruct, coach and share knowledge with other young ballplayers who wanted his help.

Duke’s ultimate wish for Taylor and Jake was for them to be happy, educated, successful adults in whatever path they chose in life.

Duke is survived by his daughter Taylor Carter and son Jake Williams of Vero Beach, mother, Nancy C. Williams of Fort Pierce, sister Laraine Cardin of Lakeland, nephews Jimmy Cardin of Vero Beach and Cody Cardin of St. Petersburg and many cousins on the Treasure Coast as well as in Tennessee.
