John "Jake" A. Russell Sr.

September 29, 1934 — November 3, 2020

John A. Russell, Sr., known as “Jake” to friends and family, died on November 3, 2020 in Fort Pierce, Florida. Jake is predeceased by Carol, his wife of 53 years and his sisters Pat and Barbara. Jake is survived by his brother Bill; his children Terri, Patti, Sue, John, and Scott and their spouses and partners; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and his dear friend Margy.

Born to Bill and Vera Russell on September 29, 1934, Jake grew up in Rockville Centre, NY. After graduating from South Side High School, he proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. A proprietor of “The Place” Bar and Restaurant in Rockville Centre for 34 years, Jake sponsored softball, basketball and bowling teams. He joined Reliance Company of the Rockville Centre Fire Department in 1953, a membership of 67 years. In 2003, he was named an Honorary Chief for his service to the organization.

Jake was a member of the Fort Pierce Elks for more than 23 years, during which time he prepared and served meals as part of the volunteer kitchen staff. He often enjoyed lunches and dinners there with many friends. Jake also planned and prepared food for Ocean Village tennis and golf events benefitting Treasure Coast Hospice. After his wife Carol passed away at Hospice in 2009, Jake volunteered in the kitchen there twice a week until the spring of 2020. He was deeply fond of the staff at Hospice and wished that he had been able to return to volunteering.

In his early life, Jake had owned a stock car, played the drums, and participated in competitive tournaments for local fire fighters. In his later life, he enjoyed watching football and car racing, played cards, and attended Mass. A member of the Catholic Church, his faith was always very important to him. Asked once what he wanted people to know at the end of his life, Jake said that he “...had a good life and a good time!”

A service in memory of Jake will be held on Monday, November 9th, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fort Pierce. Please wear masks. Social distancing will be respected.
