Joan Charlotte Willems passed away peacefully on Dec 27, 2018, at her home with her husband Don by her side.
Joan was born in Hammond, Indiana on May 30, 1932, to Julia and George Phillips. Joan was a beautiful Hungarian woman. She was a music major in college. Joan left Indiana to move to Ft. Pierce to help her sister.
After Don returned from Korea while serving in the Army, he attended a mass at St. Anastasia; that is where it all began. They both attended a beach party that night, they met, and the love story started. They were married on June 18, 1953. Joan and Don both wanted a big family and they created one.
They had 8 children, 20 grandkids and 12 great-grandchildren. Joan was a great stay at home mom and housewife for years.
Joan went back to school, got her Real Estate License, had a career as Permit Specialist for the City of Ft. Pierce totaling 18 years, and owned and ran Little Rascals Daycare Center where most of her grandkids attended. She was of the Catholic Faith and her family was her life.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Willems of Ft. Pierce, FL; children, Tanya (Jay) Knappman of Merritt Island, FL, Donnie (Sandra) Willems, Tama Clasby, Teddy (Shirley) Willems, Jon Willems, and Marty Willems all of Fort Pierce, FL; sisters, Georgine (Chuck) Mitchell of Cincinnati, OH and Judith Armfield of Orlando, FL; 20 grandchildren: Jilian, Donnie III, Brandon, David, Courtney, Brittany, Teddy Jr, Colton, Jarryd, James, Trevor, Kristian, Jon Jr, Kyle, Chloe, Cody, Logan, Megan, Reinaldo, and Renan; 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Arlene, son, David, daughter, Melissa, and son-in-law, David Clasby.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Community Care, 2900 S. Jenkins Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981.
Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019, from 5-8 PM at Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 10:00 AM at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park. A reception will follow at the Willems home.
