I helped for a breif time during the ground breaking years ago. Carole was an amazing woman that had a drive and dedication to the chimps that was one of the most amazing thing to behold. I wish I had known earlier of her passing. I keep thinking...dammit she did it!! She built it and made it happen after all the battles and struggles. Carole was a truely remarkable woman.

After seeing a article in People, I had to contact Save the Chimps. I started asking my husband for my birthday gift to adopt a chimp, instaed of another gift that I don't wear. It has been my privelge to recieve the e-mails and keep up with her work. Because of her I now volunteer at the Cincinnati Zoo as a animal handler. I do programs for school children when they visit the zoo.
It broke my heart to hear of her passing, but I know you will keep her life's work going, much like I will continue adopting.
My prayers and thoughts are with her family, friends and staff.

Florida, with many good times, especially at Christmas.
You fought bravely to make your dreams come true. You did it your way. Your legacy is unequaled

My husband and I visited the sanctuary in 2001 and met Carole. I had previously only spoken to her on the phone while working at the Jane Goodall Institute. I really admired her tenacious drive to create a home for the Coulston/ Air Force chimps. She always had their best interest at heart.

I have admired Dr.Noon since the first day I was privileged to work with her. She is a sharp, smart, devoted individual that will be missed much!!! Working at the Scantuary for about two years I saw some of the most unforgettable sights one could see. Poor defenseless Chimps she saved and brought to FL so they could have the chance at a REAL LIFE, out in the sunshine playing, fighting, sharing, caring, just like family! I send my condolences to her family, Chimps, friends, and employee's. ~ GOD BLESS~

I've known Carole since she was in 5th grade in Bay Village, Ohio. Her sister, Kay Cooney Shelton and I have been best friends since 7th grade. I so enjoyed the sleepovers with Kay, Carole, Lee and Mom, Dorothy. Carole was always such a comedian, and I attribute that to Mom, Dorothy. I last saw Carole at Kay's and my apt. in Columbus when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969...and have kept up with her accomplishments thru Kay over the years. I am so proud of Carole, living her dream and making the Save the Chimps Sanctuary a reality. From reading the guestbook, I can see that Carole touched the lives of so many who will continue her legacy. I'm so proud of Carole, and loved the story her sister Lee Asbeck told of Carole watching the movie "Lady and the Tramp" and how it impacted her life. My thoughts, prayers and hugs to Kay,Lee and family and her legacy to Saving the Chimps.

My colleague... my friend... my sanctuary sister. Carole was a moral compass on many issues for the chimpanzee community. Her leadership, her compassion, and her quick humor will be so missed. But she left a legacy of accomplishment, strong will, and inspiration. Her work at Save the Chimps will be carried on successfully by those she guided and trusted. I deeply miss her.

I was truly shocked and saddened to hear of Carole Noon's passing. I never had the privilege of meeting Carole but I will always remember the day I received a very special package from her. The package contained photos of "Lou", one of the chimps I sponsored on The Great Chimp Migration. Carole's touching letter and those magnificent photos made me cry. Our animal friends have so few fearless warriors in this world...it breaks my heart to know that one is now gone. I will honor Carole's memory by continuing to support her beloved chimps.

In memoriam: Carole C. Non

Requiescat in pace.

Peace, my heart,
let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death
but completeness.
Let love melt into memory
and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end
in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle
like the flower of the night.

Stand still, O Beautiful End,
for a moment,
and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you
and hold up my lamp
to light you on your way.

My husband and I received the announcement you mailed, and we were surprised and saddened to read of Dr. Carole Noon's passing. We met her one time at the Center's groundbreaking several years ago. From time to time we would mail in small checks, and Carole would always e-mail or send a note and say thank you. She accomplished much in her life and was a great lady. She will certainly be missed in this world.

I first met Carole in the early 80's when she was looking for what to do with her life. She joined our chimpanzoo program at Lion Country Safari and learned all about their behavior and also about the chimps themselves. The Island she watched was called "nolan's" island. The chimps there were all rescued lab chimps. She became a demonstrative voice for the lab chimp at Save the chimps. God bless her.

There is one question we can ask ourselves at the end of our lives.

"Is the world a better place for my having been here?"

Ms. Noon has nothing to worry here.

Her accomplishments on behalf of God's creatures were tremendous.

God speed, Carole Noon. God speed and thank you.

Since I learned, on May 8th, of Carole's death, I've recalled so many memories of
the 42 years I knew her. Meeting at BG in June, 1967,
the Amies, the CI, roommates
in McDonald and Prout Halls,
'fixing the door', spring break of '69 in NYC, HAIR and
Man of La Mancha on Broadway,
watching Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon at Kay's apartment in Columbus, OSU,
weddings in 1971...she to Michael; me to Bruno, German
Village and our business venture there..White Rabbit,
picnics in the woods with Beau and Zeke, Cincinnati and
the carpet cleaning business,
Michael on the river barge,
his and her green and red Porsches, my move to Florida,
my return to Columbus, our
drive to Florida with Blue,
my crazy Siamese cat in the
backseat of the Cadillac, to
help her mother settle into her condo there, another
trip to Florida to visit her,
Dorothy's death and one of the beaded flower arrange-ments she'd made, and Carole gave me....pussy willows, dogwood flowers and a butterfly...still on my shelf of keepsakes, Carole's
move to Florida, my visit with here there in the mid
80s, seeing Lee and baby Steven. From there, Carole
went back to school in Florida and I focused on motherhood and my career. Over the years, LOTS of phone
calls sharing dreams and dis-
appointments, laughing and crying. After my divorce, and when my children left for college, I called Carole
in tears and she said so matter-of-factly...'look at it this way Jen...you were Jenny Monroe, then Jenny Mommy, then Jenny Money, and now you've come full circle and can be Jenny Monroe again.'WOW...she always had a curt way with words that hit the nail on the head. I saw my life in a whole different light...Carole was my best friend for many years..few people follow their dreams with the passion and dedication she demonstrated. Her legacy is the gift of love she shared with all who knew her and her beloved chimps.
I miss her.....

I was so saddened by the news. I was so personally inspired by Carole Noon- such overwhelming proof that one person can make a difference, one voice can be heard. I was stunned to read the news about Dr. Noon last week from the chimp sanctuary in Bend, OR.

It is horrible. My support will continue for the sanctuary she devoted her entire being to...

Oh Carole – I remember the first day I met you in Alamogordo. You led me into the box where three chimpanzees had cooked to death. We stood there together with the ghosts. No words... Outside, there was a pile of rubble, the remains of the walls you’d torn down between cages. You handed me a small piece of grey, jagged concrete and said “Keep it.” I have treasured that little piece of concrete more than a diamond. It still sits on my desk, a reminder of you – your hard will, your sharp edges, your strength. You moved mountains and tore down walls. You opened cages, and you opened eyes. You led 282 chimpanzees from out of the shadows. You will live on, through Lou and Ron and Thoto – and the hundreds of chimpanzees who will someday step out of the shadows, too. Thank you for inspiring us all to fight harder and to do the impossible. xA

The world, and especially the chimps, lost a very special lady. But I know she's in heaven with all of those chimps that didn't make it to Florida, and I know she's smiling down on the islands for eternity.

I had the honor of working with Carole in setting up additional office space for her employees in Fort Pierce. I could see immediately upon our first meeting her passion for her business. I could also see the tremendous respect and admiration from all her employees that truely shared the same vision as she did. I was truely saddened by the news that I received of her much too early death. However, I know that she is smiling today in the arms of our Lord and Savior and that her business will continue to thrive without her visual presence.

Last year I saw a documentary that highlighted the extreme abuse that has been inflicted on helpless animals in in the name of science. I was haunted by an image of a chimp that was being strapped to a crosslike structure by his arms and legs. The look on his face has remained with me ever since. I couldn't sleep for days. I have found it difficult to live with the knowledge of this ongoing travesty. I came across Dr. Noon's website just today.....and am very saddened to learn of her passing. I am so grateful to know of this sanctuary for the chimps which is just an hour north of where I live. I see that there is something I can do now.My prayers are with the good Doctor and her family.

Deepest condolences to her sister, colleagues and chimp family. It was a program on TV about a chimp that made me look at the website to contact Carole and learn of her passing. I met her 10 years ago at a petsmart with her sister. She adopted a dog that was part of a group of dogs that had been abandoned at a boarding kennel for two years that I was committed to rehoming. She asked a lot of questions about the medical/behaviorial/re-socialization rehab of the dogs and her compassion was evident. I got a call a short time after she adopted Coco that she wasn't working out and Coco was threatening her and she invited me to come to her house to observe what was going on. Coco was a big "smiler" and Carole, much relieved after I explained that, told me that the way she was curling her nose, holding her lips was a threat in chimp body language. I spoke with her several times thru the years and deeply admired her commitment to rescuing the chimps. I'll never forget her, my visit to her home and the books she gave me. Thank you for being there for the chimps and Coco.
I will looking at the chimp adoption list to return her favor.

I had only recently discovered the work of Dr. Carole Noon when I learned of her illness and passing. She obviously served by example. Her work allowed us to gain a greater awareness of the needs of the innocent, the abused and less fortuante; and a greater respect for life itself. Those of us who became familar with Carole Noon's work became kinder because of it. We were blessed by the presence of Carole Noon, an angel whose work will live on and on as we strive for love and peace on earth. Please lets continue to help the chimps.

At the end of each long, hard day, around 9 o’clock in the evening, Carole went back to her small, cramped trailer to start the business of communicating with the rest of the outside world, performing all the administrative chores that were needed to make sure everything functioned as it should, all the phone calls made, all the emails written and answered. It was all for the chimps, of course, not to chat. The light in her small window burned into the wee hours.

Come the next morning, hat still on her head, little pony tail sticking through the back, she took broom and mop in hand and joined her staff in cleaning up after the overnight antics of 21 boisterous, demanding chimpanzees.

I shared in the fun of trying to help her socialize the 21 U.S. Air Force chimps that formed the first group Carole obtained. Every day for a week, we tried to get all to live in harmony, even if only for 10 minutes. We could get any combination of 19 chimps to live in peace, no problem. But, no matter how hard we tried, we could not add the final whichever two, without all hell breaking loose. We had to trust that on the appointed morning of turning the chimps out on to the island all would work out – and it did! Most thrilling of all, however, was seeing Debbie, with her painful pelvic bone condition, bypass the “Debbie’s Bridge,” which Carole had built specially for her, and saunter off, all on her own, to disappear into the mist, the first and only chimp to go as far as she could that first morning. Carole and Debbie had a lot in common; they were achievers with courage. And such was her life, in those early days. Carole’s spirit will live on; her achievements will endure.

The news of Dr. Noon's death made me instantly weep. I had an overwhelming feeling of fear and despair. There are special souls that walk among us who stand at the corners of the earth and with mere humility hold back the pain and terror that is relentlessly inflicted against the innocent. Dr. Noon healed grief, provided protection, and restored dignity to these most deserving beings. Please continue her great work for the chimps. You will always have my support and we are all deeply saddened for the loss of your founder and friend.

Carole and I had many mutual goals.. one was that she nor I would quit smoking.. and it was her lighter that always worked... as she told me how wrong I was! While we disagreed .. we also agreed.. and that was always the best care possible for the chimpanzee. I do so respect her dedication and hard work.. and I do so respect her achievements. I understood her goals. I will miss her... and you all be careful out there... the tips of her angel wings are already a bit dusty for swooping low over all of us and telling us to get back to work! She wouldn't want us to waste the time.. I WILL miss her!

We could get any combination of 19 chimps to live in peace, no problem. But, no matter how hard we tried, we could not add the final two, no matter what the combination. We had to trust that on the appointed morning of turning the chimps out on to the island all would work out – and it did. Most thrilling of all, however, was seeing Debbie, with her painful pelvic bone condition, not cross the “Debbie’s Bridge,” which Carole had had built specially for her, but saunter off, all on her own, into the morning mist, the first and only chimp to go as far as she could. Carole and Debbie had a lot in common; they were achievers. Carole’s spirit will live on, her achievements will endure.

I was shocked to hear of Dr. Noon's death. She was a fiercely loyal animal person, completely dedicated to her chimpanzee charges with her heart, soul, and mind. I had the privilege of briefly working with Dr. Noon as a volunteer, and once received a lovely letter from her giving me details about the happy Florida life of my "adopted" chimp April. Her life really made a difference to many.

I think Ms. Noon has done an excellent job in the construction and maintenance of the chimp's facilities and as a result has made very good use of our contribution funds. I will miss a being who can get things done!

Carole was an inspiration to many and will be missed. I'm sure is talking with God in heaven about what she still wants for the chimps and asking Him to please get it done soon! We must make sure her legacy goes on for the chimps.

She was a living expression of God's kindness and peace especially through her passion and compassion for chimpanzees.

We are so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Noon. What and incredible loss to both the human world and the world of the chimps she fought so long are hard to protect. I had the privledge of working with Dr. Noon and her crew as a volunteer at the rescue center in Alamogordo, NM, and as someone who stood at the gates as a protestor during the Coulston days and a proud volunteer during the Noon days, the work of the Chimp Rescue group brought me to tears. The fight will go on in Dr. Noon's honor!

Dr. Noone was an inspiration, a wonderful role model, and even though she didn't know it, she was a mentor to me. I have admired her work through the Save the Chimps website and e-mail updates. I have even thought that I will someday become a snowbird to the Fort Pierce area just so that I can volunteer at Save the Chimps!

Bless her soul for all she has done for creatures who cannot speak for themselves.

Sincerely,
Bobbye Kopec

Carole,
Now that you're in heaven, I'm picturing you in your hat, lobbying God on behalf of chimps all over the planet. And I'm confident you've won Him/Her over!!!
What a life you've led. Congratulations on achieving the unthinkable. We'll roll our sleeves up and work to carry on your work. You are gone far too soon.
With love and deepest admiration, friend.

I am so saddened by this news. I never had the honor to meet Carole but I felt this strong connection with her. Any human being with such compassion and conviction to do the right thing is someone I admired. I had hoped to meet this remarkable woman one day but I am comforted by the fact that she did this amazing work for this amzaing chimps who could have never been in better hands than hers. I know she left this world a much better place and for that I want to thank her. One day I hope to live in Florida and become more involved in this wonderful organization - I will do this work in Carole's honor. God has and will continue to bless this wonderful spirit.

Only rarely does someone come along who breaks through the false barriers between races, religions, nationalities, and species to include more living beings, of whatever group, into the family of life. Carol was one such person, who embraced chimpanzees as the equals they are. Carol inspired me, as she did countless others, and, because of her, the world is a better place. We must carry on the fight--her fight--to insure that chimpanzees, and all species, be accorded the respect, dignity, and reverence they deserve.

I started adopting chimps for Christmas preseents for my siblings children. They didn't needanything but th eChimps did. One of my nephews convence my sister to design a vacation this summer to go to Florida to see th eislands. They realize that they won't be able to touch the chimps but that doesn't matter.

I am extremely saddened to hear of Carole's passing. What a tremendous loss. If it weren't for her, the Coulston chimps would still be languishing in their jails. What a remarkable person - Carole did so much for the chimps and persevered in the face of adversity. She will be sorely missed.

I've been following the work of Save the Chimps since I saw "Chimpanzees, an Unnatural History" a couple of years ago. Chills ran up my spine when I got the e-mail about her death, even though I had never met her. Carol Noon was an angel. Sometimes when I think about all the bad things our species has done to the world I think of people like Carol Noon and it gives me new hope. I hope the tremendous work that she stared continues.

with tears in my eyes, i send my condolences to carole c. noon's family, friends and, most of all, the chimps that she so tirelessly worked to rescue. what a tremendous loss to the world, our community and chimpanzee rescue. i am a buddhist and in our view, the most valued quality of a bodhisattva is selfless compassion for suffering beings. carole c. noon was the embodiment of that quality. i will offer incense and chant the dharani for her.

I only had the chance to meet Dr. Noon once, on a visit she made to New York to generate support for Save the Chimps. She was so obviously dedicated to her work and the well-being of the chimpanzees that I couldn't imagine a better person to have taken on the mission that she did. She already talked about wanting to provide for the organization beyond her own lifetime. I hope the extended community that has supported her vision in life will continue to do so for the lifetimes of the chimpanzees she cared for so deeply. My wife and I certainly will.

OMG, this is horrible news! Thank God for Dr. Noone who took care of chimpanzees when "noone" else cared or knew how to help. She was a fierce and determined lady who was a beacon of light to the chimps for whom she cared so much. My father died of pancreatic cancer in 1978. It is an insidious disease. Our prayers and devotion go to her family, friends and the chimp foundation. May her work live on to help free all enslaved chimpanzees from abuse.

You are a great role model and I will continue to make sacrifices for Apes and now even more in your honor. Thank you so much for your endless compassion and inspiration.

Carole Noon was the real deal. A true hero for the animals. I remember how she held Bobby's hand in "the dungeon" as he nervously prepared to meet his new chimp family after all of those dark, lonely years of torture in the research lab. Thankfully, Dr. Noon's brilliant, compassionate staff at Save the Chimps (STC) will carry on - protecting chimpanzees and honoring her legacy. I will forever miss Carole and continue to support the chimps at STC. Thank you my friend for making such great use of your time here!!

I barely knew Carole but I did follow her work. Her dedication to provide a new life for abused chimpanzees earned my admiration. Such a champion will be sorely missed.

Carole: I came to Savethechimps seeking meaning. I found that and ultimately a friend. These last 5 years have had a profound impact on my life. More importantly, you have had an impact on so many lives-the chimps most especially. They know the sacrifices that you made for them, and they loved you so much for it. The world is a sadder place without you. I am honored to have known you and to have been your friend. I miss you.-Sharon

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Noon when the sanctuary was first opened. She took me around the complex and told me about her dream. I am happy to say that my life was enhanced because of that visit. The chimps have lost a true hero and guardian. They have gained a home and refuge in return.. God bless you Dr. Noon.

Carole was one of the toughest and gentlest people on the planet. Gentle, loving, and infinitely patient with those creatures of all kinds she cared about so much; tough as nails as a fighter on their behalf. May she rest in piece, and may her work continue and flourish.

Dr. Carole Noon was a hero. Her life, her work, her dreams, made a huge difference in this world. Although I had spoken with Carole several times by phone over the years I never had the honor of meeting her in person, a fact that I will now always regret. If there is a paradise after this life, I know Carole is there smiling and talking with the animals.

Her spirit will live here at sanctuary and she will always hold a great place in our hearts. Thank you Dr Noon. We love you.

She gave the gift of freedom and fresh air to individuals who knew only captivity and manipulation. May the light she brought into their world be reflected in all future endeavors to protect chimpanzees.

When we met, you jokingly tried to steal my husband, thinking you needed a man to help find the funding to help chimps. Well, dear Carole, you didn't need him or anyone but your own determination to make a difference in the lives of so many of your chimp friends and beyond. Rest in peace, strong woman.

Carole was one of the most passionate, driven, accomplished people I have been lucky enough to meet. The good work she did for chimpanzees will never be forgotten. Every time another chimp gets retired out of a lifetime in a lab, and touches grass for the first time, Carole will be watching, and we can thank her for making that happen.

Carole Noon will be greatly missed.

She worked tirelessly to rescue, rehouse and relocate dozens of chimpanzees who were living in terrible conditions in New Mexico. She showed great courage in seemingly impossible situations and has made an enormous difference in the lives of so many beings.

From my first visit to the new sanctuary at Ft. Pierce it was evident that this was a vast undertaking. Carole soldiered on, she inspired so many to help her. She had a huge heart and she never gave up. It was a pleasure to know her.

with many memories of one brave lady!

Words cannot convey what we have all lost with Carole's passing. She truly and inimitably lit up and changed the world for those lucky enough to know her, chimpanzee and non-chimpanzee alike. Her indomitable spirit is what made Save the Chimps a reality, and will live on as a testament to making possible the seemingly impossible.

Carole was a remarkable woman with a huge heart and indomitable courage. She was an inspiration and the embodiment of true friendship and bonds that can't be broken, no matter the challenges. She lives forever in the glory of her accomplishments and her spirit of dedication to making the world a better place for those who couldn't speak for themselves. She was one of life's real treasures. Even in her final hours, she found the strength to share her warmth, humor, and love. She was a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to call her "friend". She gave so much to so many, and we are all, chimps and humans alike, much the better for being given the gift of Carole Noon.

I never had the honor of meeting her, she was my hero. I loved her for the love and compassion she had for another living specie, the Chimpanzees. I loved her for fighting for what she believed in, and dedicating her life to giving the Chimps a life that was worth living. I loved listening to her talk about the Chimps, and I will miss her. I feel sad for the Chimps, they will miss her, too.
To her family,friends and
Chimps, I will keep you all in my prayers.
May God Bless you, and help you find comfort in the days to follow.

On behalf of everyone at the International Primate Protection League, we extend our condolences to the friends and family of our colleague Dr. Carole Noon. The world is a better place for her human friends and the hundreds of chimpanzees she rescued from misery in a notorious New Mexico laboratory to create a lovely home for them in Florida. That is her monument.
