Sylvia Davey Orr, 93, died July 15, 2016 in Fort Pierce, Florida where she had resided since 1954. Mrs. Orr was born in Hurt, Virginia, August 19, 1922, to the late John Reed Davey and Pearl Pleasants Davey. She attended Averett College and received a nursing degree from the University of Virginia. Following graduation, she worked as a public health nurse with Dr. R.W. Garnett, the Public Health Physician for the Danville, Virginia Public Health Department, and established a mental health program in Danville. Mrs. Orr took nursing courses at the Indian River Community College and worked as a nurse alongside her husband, Alva Denton Orr, MD, who had a private medical practice in Fort Pierce, Florida for 30 years.

Preceded in death by her husband, Alva Denton Orr, MD, and son Alva Denton Orr, Jr., she is survived by her son, Roger G. Orr; grandsons, Alva Denton Orr, III, Robert I. Orr, and Roger Jason Orr; six great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Davey Brown of Madison Heights, Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

While nursing defined Mrs. Orr’s life, of utmost importance were her Christian faith, her family, and her caregivers. She was a member of the Indian River Presbyterian Church, the Woman’s Club of Fort Pierce, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A service will be held at a later date at Happy Valley Memorial Park, in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
