Naomi Davey Hodges

Mrs. Naomi Davey Hodges of Fort Pierce passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015. A devoted Christian, wife, mother, and educator, Mrs. Hodges was born Feb. 4, 1927, in Durham, N.C., and grew up in Danville, Va. She was educated in Danville schools and earned an associate of arts degree from Averett College. She received her bachelor's degree from Longwood University in
Farmville, Va., and later earned a master's degree in library science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Mrs. Hodges taught in North Carolina and Virginia before moving to Fort Pierce in 1966. She taught English and American literature at Dan McCarty High School in Fort Pierce, and later accepted a position as librarian at Lawnwood Elementary School in Fort Pierce, introducing hundreds of youngsters to the joy of reading over the years.

She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce, where she taught children's Sunday School, served on the church's administrative board, and also belonged to the Christian Fellowship adult Sunday School class. Mrs. Hodges was a member of the Cora Stickney Harper chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and also was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and frequent camping trips with her husband, the late Claude H. Hodges, Jr., after they retired. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional society, the American Association of University Women, and the Mid-Florida Chapter of the Nation MS Society.

She will be remembered for her devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, a caring concern for her friends and neighbors, and her strength and perseverance. Mrs. Hodges' dearest love was her three children, Claude Davey (Dave) Hodges of Tallahassee, Fla., Susan Hodges Ferrer of Fort Lauderdale, and Elizabeth Ann (Libby) Hodges of Davie, Fla. She is also survived by two sisters, Sylvia Orr of Fort Pierce, Betty Brown of Madison Heights, Va., daughter-in-law Jennifer Hodges, son-in-law Orlando Ferrer, grandsons Richard H. Hodges of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Orlando Jose Ferrer of Naples, Fla., as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Claude H. Hodges, Jr.; her parents, John R. and Pearl Pleasants Davey; brother Reed Vernon Davey, and sisters Vivian Fitzgerald and Hazel Sugg.

The family will receive friends at Haisley Funeral Home in Fort Pierce from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Funeral services will take place May 23 at Prospect United Methodist Church in Yanceyville N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Children’s Way, Enterprise, Fla. 32725, in her memory.
