John M. Souza, Jr., 90, passed away on June 24, 2015.
John is survived by Elaine, his wife of 4 years, sons, John David (Peggy) and Michael, and daughter, Janet Ingraham, 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brother, Robert (Sue) of Thousand Oaks, CA and sister, Sylvia Lyon (Jessie) of Yucca Valley, CA.
John was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children Elsie May (Jones), son Stephen, parents John M. and Ethel V. Souza and sisters Dolores Durant and Lillian Mraz.
John served in the Army Air Corp. during World War II in the European African Middle East Theater Campaign. When he returned stateside, he liked to keep busy and enjoyed different types of employment. He especially loved to cook and owned two delicatessens in Massachusetts before retiring to Florida in 1977.
John was active in the Pythagorean Masonic Lodge in Massachusetts, among other organizations in that state. In Florida, he was active in the Civil Air Patrol, taught Adult Education at I.R.C.C., was a founding member (and served in a variety of positions) of the Ft. Pierce First Congregational UCC Church, volunteered to transport Veterans to the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, was a dedicated member, volunteer and officer in the Stephen N. Gladwin American Legion Post 40 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14, was a Lifetime Member of the DAV Chapter 14 and the VFW Post 10554, and was a member of the International Order of Old Bastards.
John’s hobbies were varied. He loved to restore Metropolitan Automobiles, work in the garden and communicate by CB Radio. He had a creative mind and loved to figure out how to fix or make things, or to repurpose items. And he especially loved making his Portuguese bread for communion for Sundays for church.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 3:00 PM at First Congregational UCC Church; 3601 Kirby Loop Road, Fort Pierce, FL. 34981
