Doris Jones Maughan

Doris Jones Maughan, age 88, of Fort Pierce, Florida passed away Saturday, April 29th, 2017.

Doris was born in 1928 in Pittston, Pennsylvania to Howard and Blanche Jones. She was a graduate of Meyers High in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Following marriage, Doris and her family moved to Florida in 1955. Her father, Howard Jones, taught at Vero Beach High School, helped found the Little League of Vero Beach, and owned many properties, including the famous Windswept Hotel.

Doris and her husband, Jack Maughan, lived in Fort Pierce, raised 3 devoted children, Alice, John, and Mary Lee, and were long-time parishioners of St. Anastasia and St. Mark’s Catholic churches.
Jack worked for the Miami Herald as regional Distribution Manager, and was active in numerous service organizations, including serving as President of the Toastmasters, Marine Corps. League Commandant, and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Doris retired from Bellsouth after a career of over 30 years, working as a switchboard operator and then moving to the Engineering department as a drafting clerk. While working as an operator, Doris was credited with saving the life of a Sebastian man who had fallen ill and dropped the phone when attempting to summon help.

Doris was a member of the CWA and past President and Treasurer of the Ladies of the Knights, Council 3416, of Fort Pierce. She was actively involved with the children’s Christmas party, fundraising, and the Lenten fish dinners hosted by the Knights.

Doris was an avid reader and instilled a love of books and education in her children. She loved music and Broadway musicals. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with friends and family.

Doris was a loving Mother, Grandmother, sister and Aunt and will be missed dearly. Doris is survived by her children, Alice Maughan DeHart, and her husband, Michael, of Norman, Oklahoma; John Maughan of Fort Pierce; and Mary Lee Maughan Barry, and her husband, Kevin, of Asharoken, NY; her grandchildren, Sarah DeHart Culpepper, and her husband, Nick, of Rogers, Arkansas; and John, Michael and Joseph Barry of Asharoken, NY; her sister, Ellie Jones Miller, and husband, Randy, of Vero Beach, Florida; her brother, Howard Jones, and wife, Marianne, of League City, Texas; and sister-in-law Pamela Jones of Heiskell, Tennessee.

Doris is predeceased by her loving husband, Jack Maughan of Fort Pierce; her grandson, Matthew DeHart, of Norman; and siblings, Marilyn Jones Rich of Marion, North Carolina; and Bobby Jones of Heiskell, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that Doris supported all her life.

The visitation will be at Haisley Funeral Home in Fort Pierce from 5 to 7 pm with a Wake Service at 6:00 pm on Friday, May 5th. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anastasia Catholic Church 10 am, Saturday, May 6th. Burial services will be at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach immediately following.
